3 Safety Tips for Employers in the Light Industrial Industry

Today’s post will discuss three safety tips for employers in the light industrial industry. It’s no secret to employers that injuries in the workplace are costly. In fact, according to an article in Tech Jury, “Every second, an average of 14 American workers sustain injuries”. However, there are several things you can do to reduce this number and keep workers productive and safe. Let’s explore the three ways below.

1. Training

Injuries at work can happen due to a lack of experience or knowledge. Machinery and heavy equipment require safety protocols. Employees should be familiar with the machinery and know how to test it to ensure it works properly before use. Use the training as a time to remind employees of mandatory equipment that needs to be worn while operating equipment or handling hazardous material. Remember, when there has been a lack of training, your company becomes more liable for worker compensation lawsuits.

2. Be Aware of Workplace Hazards

The good news is that since OSHA (a government agency for Occupational Safety and Health Administration) came into existence, workplace deaths and injuries have dramatically decreased. Do routine inspections making sure that all equipment and working conditions meet OSHA’s safety standards. In addition, be aware of things that could cause accidents, like wet surfaces, fire hazards, or blocked exits. Create an emergency safety plan, so if an incident does occur, employees know how to take action quickly.

3. Encourage Employees to Report

Finally, your employees are your eyes and ears when you can’t be on the floor. Empower employees to report conditions that they feel are unsafe or pose a risk. Listen to their feedback and do what you can do to minimize the risk. Make sure that they are aware of who to go to and what the process is for reporting safety information. Make safety a team mentality and encourage employees to work together to keep everyone safe.
