Keeping Your Employees Engaged This Winter

Winter is a time when many people experience apathy, lower mood, and become less engaged in their work. As the days become shorter and the weather becomes colder, it is not uncommon for employees to feel they are in a rut of routine. However, there are things you can do to help employees stay active and engaged. Let’s explore three ways below.

  1. Break Up the Routine

Whether your office is large or small, winter is a great time to break up the monotony. An office party or team-building workshop on a slower day is a fun way to help your employees stay engaged. You can also create an incentive program to reward departments for good results and productivity. New programs add an element of excitement to the day in and day out of work. Be creative and find ways to give your employees a break from regularly scheduled activities.

2. Show that You Care

Winter is a great time to show gratitude to your employees. Sending employees handwritten thank you cards highlighting their unique qualities is a free way to show appreciation. Everyone appreciates praise, especially when it comes from a genuine place. Year-end bonuses or an additional day of PTO is another way to show your team that you appreciate their hard work. Buying your employees lunch is always a nice gesture. Simple things can make a big difference.

3. Invite Creativity

To spark interest, make winter a time of evaluation. Use this valuable time to invite your employees to give feedback on company processes. Send out a company survey asking employees if they have new ideas for the company or areas where they would like to see improvement. Brainstorming sessions can lead to new solutions and money saved. Create a space for employees to make suggestions. Then listen and implement where you can. Your employees will feel heard and in return have a sense of ownership and engagement.
